Poisoning

Any non-food substance (medicine, plant, chemical) is a potential poison.

More than 90% of poison exposures occur in the home.

Of the more than 2 million poison exposures, 52.7% occur among children younger than 6 years of age.

Prevention:

  • Store all medications, household products, personal care products out of reach of children.
  • Do not call medicine candy.
  • Always store household products in original containers.
  • Never leave poisonous cleaning products unattended while using them.

Signs & Symptoms:

  • Unusual breath smell, body odor, or odor on clothing
  • Excessive drooling
  • Stains or blistering around the mouth
  • Diarrhea
  • Dizziness
  • Nausea & vomiting
  • Convulsions / Seizures
  • Unconsciousness or altered level of consciousness
  • Abnormal breathing
  • Abnormal pulse
  • Watering eyes
  • Stomach pain or cramping
  • Spilled or empty container

Obtain package or container of suspected poison with intact label to the phone.

Immediately call 9-1-1, they will in turn connect you with poison control. Follow telephone instructions.
