Johnson County uses an enhanced 911 public access system. The calls are received through the Johnson County Emergency Communications Center (ECC). Emergency medical dispatchers, with the use of a computer aided dispatch (CAD) system, dispatch and track EMS units and fire department first responders on calls for emergency assistance.
Units are dispatched to an event using a protocol based, priority medical dispatching program. This ensures an appropriate level of response according to the circumstance of the emergency incident. Highest priority incidents are dispatched Code 1 (all units respond lights and sirens); Intermediate incidents are dispatched Code 2 (closest unit to the call responds lights and sirens; all other units respond non-emergent), and lowest priority incidents are dispatched Code 3 (no lights and sirens used by any responding unit).
Upon arrival to a scene, the first arriving unit advises all other responding units of a patient triage. Units enroute to the call (upon receiving triage notification) will upgrade or downgrade their response accordingly.
