Requirements for Eligibility and Employment

Description:
To ensure that quality applicants are hired and maintained by the Emergency Medical Services Department, all applicants for technical positions and current technical staff must meet and maintain certain requirements.

Responsibilities:
All personnel: must meet the following requirements.

Procedures:

  1. Application must be made through the Johnson County Human Resources Department. Applicants must:
    • be at least 18 years of age.
    • provide evidence of high school diploma, or equivalent.
    • provide evidence of Kansas certification at either the EMT or MICT level.
    • provide evidence of a valid driver's license and a safe driving record
    • provide evidence of the ability to effectively communicate in oral and written form to the extent necessary to perform all job responsibilities.
    • have no psychological or physical impairments that would prevent fulfilling their job description.
    • be willing to work any day of the week, as scheduled, including holidays.
    • not engage in any acts specified under KSA 64-4324, Section b, of the Emergency Medical Services Act:
      • has been guilty of misrepresentation in obtaining certification;
      • has engaged or attempted to engage in, or represented themselves entitled to perform any service not authorized in the certificate;
      • has demonstrated incompetence, or has shown themselves otherwise unable to provide adequate service;
      • has violated or aided or abetted in the violation of any provision of this act or the rules and regulations promulgated thereunder;
      • has been convicted of any offense involving moral turpitude;
      • has been convicted of a felony and after that such person has not been sufficiently rehabilitated to warrant the public trust;
      • has demonstrated habitual intemperance or is addicted to the use of habit-forming drugs; or
      • has engaged in unprofessional conduct."
  2. The Human Resource Department will screen applicants who meet the qualifications, as specified. They will recommend applicants to the department for further consideration.
  3. Upon referral from the Johnson County Human Resource Department, the Department of Emergency Medical Services will administer a written examination. A minimum standard of base knowledge will be required for the applicant to continue with the employment process.
  4. Following successful completion of the written examination, the applicant may be eligible for a departmental assessment including an interview and practical.
  5. Following the departmental interview, considered applicants must successfully complete a post-offer psychological assessment and physical examination including a drug screen.
  6. Candidates for employment will be selected from the most qualified applicants completing the above requirements.
