Frequent Questions

1. How do I apply for a paramedicor EMT position at Johnson County MED-ACT?

ANSWER: You will need to obtain an official application packet from the MED-ACT office. Just call 913-715-1950 to request an application packet.

On Line: Fill out the application through the Johnson County Human Resource website.

2. What information will I need to complete in the application packet?

ANSWER: The application packet should contain the following information and forms:

  • Employment application (PDF - Word)
    • Equal Employment Opportunity Questionnaire (form)
    • Johnson County Employee Disclosure and Authorization Regarding Use of Motor Vehicle Records and Criminal History Check (form)
    • Driver’s License Verification (form)
    • Authorization and Release (form)
    • Authorization for Release of Information
      (KS criminal history check) (form)
    • Request for Criminal Record Check State of Missouri (form)
  • Current resume
  • Official College Transcripts
  • Completed Verification of Paramedic or EMT Education form
  • Photocopy of NREMT Paramedic or EMT Certification or current paramedic student will need a photocopy of NREMT EMT Certification
  • Photocopy of Kansas Paramedic or EMT Certification or current paramedic student will need a photocopy of Kansas EMT Certification
  • Photocopy of Social Security Card
  • Photocopy of Drivers License
  • Current paramedic student will need to have Authorization and Release of School Information (form)

3. Is there an application deadline?

ANSWER: YES, completed applications need to be received at the MED-ACT office on or before the end of the posted date found in the packet.

4. What happens after my application is on file?

ANSWER: All the information provided by you is officially verified. This verification includes but is not limited to confirming your prior work history, driving history, etc.

5. Will I take any tests?

ANSWER: YES, once a resume or application is received in the MED-ACT office, you will receive a letter asking you to arrange a mutually convenient date and time to complete the pre-employment written examination. This written examination needs to be taken on or before the posted date in the letter. Arrangements can be made to take the test at a location outside Johnson County.

6. Do I need to bring anything into the MED-ACT office for the pre-employment hiring process?

ANSWER: YES, on the day of your written examination you will need to bring your (1) driver’s license, (2) social security card, and (3) National Registry card or Kansas certification card. Please no copies, all originals.

7. What will be on the written examination?

ANSWER: The written examination consists of 100 to 180 multiple-choice questions covering knowledge objectives from the National Standard EMT-Paramedic Training Curriculum. This written examination was prepared by the National Registry of EMTs and is very challenging, please prepare accordingly.

8. Is there a minimum score I need to obtain on the written?

ANSWER: You must obtain a minimum score of 70% to continue in the employment process.

9. Where can I take this written test and how long will I need?

ANSWER: This written examination will be given at the MED-ACT Office at 11811 South Sunset Drive, Suite 1100, Olathe, KS. This written examination will be scheduled on any business day between 0900 - 1500 hr. You should allow yourself at least 2 hours to complete this examination. Arrangements can be made to take the test at a location outside Johnson County.

10. What happens if I don’t score above the minimum?

ANSWER: You will need to re-apply for the next employment process. This process is held approximately two to three times per year.

11. What happens if I score above the minimum?

ANSWER: The MED-ACT office will contact you and you will be scheduled for the next part of the employment process.

12. After successfully completing the written examination what are the other parts of the pre-employment hiring process?

ANSWER: The next parts are:

  • Part #2 Cardiac Arrest Scenario: You will be evaluated on your ability to manage a cardiac arrest, including actual delivery of airway management, electrical therapy, drug administration, dynamic ECG interpretation, and directing other members of your cardiac arrest team. You should also be prepared to deal with family members, first responders, & hospital personnel. You should use AHA-ACLS standards as your guidelines for treatment. This station is reported as Pass or Fail and you must pass this station to continue to step #3.
  • Part #3 Panel Interview: You will spend approximately 30-45 minutes answering general questions about your prior education, work history, and views about EMS.

13. What happens if I don’t pass the cardiac arrest scenario?

ANSWER: You will need to re-apply for the next employment process. This process is held approximately two to three times per year.

14. When will I know if I have a new job or not?

ANSWER: It will take between five (5) to ten (10) business days after the employment process before you receive an answer to this question.

15. How will I be notified?

ANSWER: You will either receive a phone call or a letter in the mail.

16. If I am made a job offer, what will be my starting salary?

ANSWER: The Chief of the department or designee will make you a job offer and inform you of your starting salary?

17. Is my starting salary negotiable?

ANSWER: The Chief does have some latitude on the starting salary.

18. Do you offer relocation (i.e. moving expenses) assistance?

ANSWER: Relocation expenses may be reimbursed for people who have to move their residence to the KC metro area.

19. Are there any special conditions to my employment?

ANSWER: Once you are made a job offer and you accepted, it is contingent upon you successfully completing several post-job offer requirements.

20. What are the post job offer requirements?

ANSWER: The post job offer requirements are:

  • Psychological assessment
  • Drug screening
  • Completion of a Wellness Physical, which includes lab work and assessments:
    • Pre-exercise hear rate, blood pressure, height, weight, body mass index, body fat, grip strength, pulmonary function test, coronary risk profile, strength and flexibility test
  • MVO2max treadmill test (follows Bruce protocol)
  • Work capacity evaluation, which includes:
    • Medical equipment retrieval
    • Manual patient move
    • Floor to chair transfer
    • Stair chair carry
    • Chest compressions
    • Spine board carry
    • Cot utilization
    • Loading of the cot
    • Return of medical equipment
  • Paramedic students must become certified paramedics by a mutual agreed upon date.

21. What should I wear when I come to participate in the pre-employment hiring process?

ANSWER: You need to use your best judgment and dress as you feel would be appropriate. Remember, part two of the process will require you to run a cardiac arrest scenario.

22. What should I wear when I come to participate in the post-offer process?

ANSWER: You should wear business casual clothing for the Psychological assessment and work out clothing for the other components of the post-offer process.

23. When will the post-offer process be schedule and how long will it take?

ANSWER: The post-offer process is schedule almost immediately following your acceptance of the job. It will take you several hours to complete the Psychological assessment and several hours to complete the other components of the post-employment process. When possible, everything is scheduled to be completed on the same day.

24. What is a good way to learn more about Johnson County MED-ACT?

ANSWER: One of the very best ways to learn about MED-ACT is to do a ride along. All candidates are encouraged to complete the observer application (found in your employment packet) and participate in MED-ACT’s ride along program.
