Battalion Chief - Training

The Training Chiefs are responsible for providing paramedics continuing education and training necessary to meet the demands of the system and for Kansas State Bureau of Emergency Medical Services (KSBEMS) annual re-certification. The Chiefs coordinate and provide orientation and training for new employees and employees who are promoted to new positions within the department, and provide programs that help develop all employees in the areas of clinical expertise.

Training Chiefs assist with monitoring and evaluating departmental personnel performance as it applies to clinical, educational, and operational issues. This is accomplished through review of patient reports, biomedical reports, written and psychomotor testing, and observing performance at the scene and during patient transport.

Training Cheifs assist in the development and revision of departmental clinical protocols, other department policies and procedures, and program design. They also research EMS related practices, and conduct retrospective and prospective studies to determine the efficacy of EMS practices.

Each Training Chief is assigned a shift. The Chief will visit a crew at their station to conduct training sessions utilizing various formats such as small group training and lecture settings. The Chief will also deliver training equipment to requesting crews for in-station trainings.

Community Education

The paramedics of Johnson County Med-Act realize that the first person at the scene of most emergencies is a private citizen. The citizen becomes the first link in the chain of survival for the victim. If the citizen is trained in CPR and First Aid, that very important link is strengthened. Public information and education programs offered through Johnson County Med-Act include injury prevention as well as informative programs.

The Community Education Division consists of a team of three individuals. The Division Chief for Community Education and two Community Education Officers. This team works closely together in developing new education programs, updating existing programs, and representing Med-Act in a variety of forums. Each team member has specific areas of expertise, and therefore compliment each other in creating a progressive department. This team is also responsible for performing the duties of the Public Information Officer when appropriate.
