Med-Act units are located throughout Johnson County to provide advanced level emergency care with optimum response times. The county is divided into response districts with units strategically positioned within the district. Depending on call volume, EMS unit availability, and call location; situations may dictate that any unit could respond to any other district. While each EMS unit has a defined response district, the districts are only representative of what is generally the "first due" area for a given station while the system is at rest. With the deployment of AVL (automatic vehicle location), the CAD is able to better determine closest unit availability on a dynamic basis. When requested, Med-Act will also provide mutual aid response for areas outside of the county. In all but 2 locations the units are housed in fire department stations. These 2 locations are stand alone ambulance stations.

The county is served by a tiered response system in which a fire/rescue unit and a Med-Act unit both initially respond to the scene of an emergency.

Med-Act operates both ambulances and Paramedic Advance Response (PAR) units. Ambulances are Type III Ford cutaway vans with Horton manufactured modules. PAR units are Ford Expeditions equipped with first response ALS equipment. Ambulances are staffed with 2 paramedics, including a paramedic and an officer, and PAR units with 1 paramedic. We have 21 ambulances (13.5 are staffed) in the system and 6 PAR units (4 are staffed).

Headquarters

Med-Act Headquarters is housed at 11811 South Sunset Dr., Suite 1100 in Olathe, Kansas in the Sunset Office Building. This location is in the center of Johnson County.

While most of the population currently resides to the north and east portions of the counties, the south and western portions of the county are seeing tremendous growth.

The current site of headquarters opened April, 2006. Headquarters houses all administrative staff, with the exception of field supervisors. It is also the location of choice for team trainings, council and group meetings, some community education programs, and point of contact between the department and outside agencies.

The Emergency Operations Team operates their Emergency Medical Services Operations Center (EMSOC) activities out of this office during severe weather or emergency conditions.

Partnerships

One of the most significant operational changes within Med-Act occured in 2002 with the creation of a partnership between Med-Act and the Overland Park Fire Department to provide ALS in that City. Under this program, Med-Act and the Overland Park Fire Department Inc. share multiple resources, including personnel, training, equipment and facilities. The five units comprising the Partnership are each staffed with an OPFD paramedic and a Med-Act Team Lieutenant and are housed in an Overland Park station. The units are supervised by a Med-Act Batallion Chief. The partnership structure has been widely discussed and is seen region-wide as a pioneering effort in public safety efficiency.
