Med-Act units are located throughout Johnson County to provide advanced level emergency care with optimum response times. The county is divided into response districts with units strategically positioned within the district. Depending on call volume, EMS unit availability, and call location; situations may dictate that any unit could respond to any other district. While each EMS unit has a defined response district, the districts are only representative of what is generally the "first due" area for a given station while the system is at rest. With the deployment of AVL (automatic vehicle location), the CAD is able to better determine closest unit availability on a dynamic basis. When requested, Med-Act will also provide mutual aid response for areas outside of the county. In all but 2 locations the units are housed in fire department stations. These 2 locations are stand alone ambulance stations.
The county is served by a tiered response system in which a fire/rescue unit and a Med-Act unit both initially respond to the scene of an emergency.
Med-Act operates both ambulances and Paramedic Advance Response (PAR) units. Ambulances are Type III Ford cutaway vans with Horton manufactured modules. PAR units are Ford Expeditions equipped with first response ALS equipment. Ambulances are staffed with 2 paramedics, including a paramedic and an officer, and PAR units with 1 paramedic. We have 21 ambulances (13.5 are staffed) in the system and 6 PAR units (4 are staffed).
