He has served on the Governor's EMS Advisory Council (now called the Kansas Board of EMS) and as Chairman of the Kansas Association of EMS Administrators (now the Administrator's Society of the Kansas EMS Association). Mr. McFarlane continued his position in Lawrence for twenty-six years and during the last four years served as the Deputy Chief of the Lawrence-Douglas County Fire and Medical Department. In 2000, he retired from Lawrence-Douglas County, and accepted the position of Director of EMS at Johnson County Med-Act.

Director McFarlane's goal is best reflected in the Department Mission Statement:
